What ShoreMeter does

ShoreMeter is a distance from shore app for small boats, speedboats and RIBs. It answers a simple question that skippers often estimate by eye: how far is your boat from the nearest coastline? The app combines GPS position with offline coastline data to show coastline distance, boat speed in knots, GPS accuracy and a clear planing status based on your selected rule settings. It is an informational safety aid — not a navigation app and not a legal instrument.

Everything you need for safe coastal awareness

01

Distance from shore

See your current boat distance from shore calculated from GPS and downloaded coastline data. The display is rounded for practical use on the water.

02

Boat speed in knots

ShoreMeter measures your current speed in knots using GPS and compares it with your selected planing speed limit.

03

Planing distance and local rules

Set planing distance limits per country or use automatic rule mode where available. The app shows whether planing is allowed or prohibited based on your distance and speed.

04

Offline coastline data

Download offline coastline data packages for Slovenia and Croatia. After download, distance calculations work locally on your device without an internet connection.

05

GPS accuracy

A live GPS accuracy indicator helps you judge how reliable the current distance and speed readings are under real conditions.

06

Sound and visual alerts

When your speed and distance indicate that planing is not allowed, ShoreMeter can show a visual warning and play an alert sound so you notice before it becomes a problem.

Supported areas and offline coastline packages

ShoreMeter ships with offline coastline data packages built from open geographic sources, simplified for mobile use. Download only the regions you need. The initial version supports the Slovenian coast and Croatian Adriatic packages below.

ShoreMeter is an informational safety aid for boaters, swimmers, divers and everyone near the coast. It does not replace official nautical charts, local regulations, buoys, notices to mariners or instructions from maritime authorities. ShoreMeter is not a navigation app and cannot be used as proof of legal compliance. Always follow official local rules on the water.

Important limitations

ShoreMeter is in an early stage and may not be fully tested in all situations. Coastline data can be incomplete or simplified and may not include every islet, reef, rock, artificial structure or local exception. Distance and planing status depend on GPS accuracy and your selected settings. Use ShoreMeter as an additional aid only — never as your sole navigation or safety source.
