1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how the ShoreMeter application accesses data, what data it uses, why it is used, how data is stored, and to whom data may be disclosed.

ShoreMeter is a mobile application for informational display of boating speed and approximate distance from the nearest sea coast. For this purpose, the application uses device location data, locally stored coastline data, user settings, and technical data necessary for operation.

2. Data used by the application

2.1 Location data

The application uses device location data such as latitude, longitude, location accuracy, speed (if provided by the device), and timestamp of the location reading.

Location data is required to calculate current distance to the nearest coast, current speed in knots, and status relative to the configured planing threshold.

For core functionality, the application uses location data during app use. The application is not intended for covert tracking of users.

2.2 User settings

The application may locally store settings such as selected language, selected country or ruleset, configured coastal distance, configured speed threshold, downloaded coastline packages, and first-run or onboarding status.

These settings are stored on the device to ensure operation in line with user preferences.

2.3 Downloaded coastline data

Users may download coastline data packages for specific regions. These packages contain sea coastline geometry, such as coastlines of mainland and islands.

This data is not personal data of the user. It is stored locally on the device and used to calculate distance from the coast.

2.4 Technical data during server communication

When the application retrieves coastline package lists or downloads coastline data from the server, the server may technically process data such as IP address, date and time of request, request URL, device or application type (if included in the request), and basic server log data.

This data is used to ensure service operation, security, troubleshooting, and basic technical administration.

2.5 Advertising-related data

The application may display advertisements through external advertising networks, such as Google AdMob.

Depending on user consent choices, device settings, and provider rules, advertising providers may process advertising identifiers, approximate location, device data, ad impression data, ad interaction data, diagnostics, and other data required to deliver, measure, and limit advertising.

Where required, the application presents a consent form for advertising and privacy settings.

3. What the application does not do

In its core operation, ShoreMeter does not require user registration, does not require first name, last name, or email address, does not provide user-generated public posting features, does not use location to render navigation routes, is not intended for permanent user tracking, and does not sell users' personal data.

If new features involving additional data processing are introduced in the future, this Privacy Policy will be updated accordingly.

4. Purpose of data processing

Data is used for core application functions (calculation of boating speed, distance to nearest coast, and status relative to configured planing thresholds), storage of settings, download and updates of coastline data, ad display, as well as security and troubleshooting.

5. Legal basis

Depending on the usage context and user location, data may be processed on the basis of service performance and delivery of functions requested by the user, legitimate interests in maintaining security, stability, and improvement of the application, user consent (where required, especially for certain advertising purposes), or compliance with legal obligations.

6. Device location permission

The application uses device location only when the user grants permission through operating system settings.

The user may change or revoke location permission at any time in device settings. If permission is revoked, the application cannot calculate current distance from the coast or boating speed.

For core distance calculations, location data is processed on the device. The application does not need to send current location to the server for coastline distance calculations once coastline data is downloaded and stored locally.

7. Local data storage

The application may store user settings, selected language, rule configuration, downloaded coastline packages, and installation or package download state locally on the device.

This data is necessary for application functionality and user experience. The user can remove this data by clearing app data or uninstalling the application from the device.

8. Coastline data and open-source resources

The application uses coastline data that may be prepared from open-source geographic resources such as OpenStreetMap or other publicly available sources.

This data is intended for informational distance calculation to the nearest sea coast. It is not an official nautical chart and is not legally binding.

9. Advertisements and external providers

The application may use external advertising providers such as Google AdMob.

Such providers may act as independent controllers or processors, depending on data category, configuration, consent choices, and applicable legal rules. Where available or required, users may manage consent at first launch or in privacy settings.

10. Recipients of data

Data may be disclosed to or accessible by hosting or server providers, advertising service providers, technical service providers required for app operation, and competent public authorities where required by law.

The application does not sell users' personal data.

11. Data transfers outside the EU/EEA

If the application uses external providers, such as advertising or technical services, certain data may be processed outside the European Union or the European Economic Area.

In such cases, providers typically apply appropriate safeguards, such as contractual mechanisms, standard contractual clauses, or other legal transfer mechanisms where required.

12. Data retention

Locally stored data remains on the device until deleted by the user, until the application is uninstalled, or until data is removed or updated for technical reasons.

Technical server logs are retained only for a limited period necessary for security, troubleshooting, and service operation. The specific retention period is 30 days.

Data processed by advertising providers is retained according to their policies and the user's privacy settings.

13. Data security

The provider applies reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect data, including HTTPS communication with the server, restricted access to server files, local storage of coastline packages, and limitation of data collection to what is necessary for application operation.

However, no system is completely secure. Users should understand that internet use, mobile devices, and external services always involve a certain level of risk.

14. User rights

Where the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or similar legislation applies, users may have rights to information, access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, objection, withdrawal of consent (where processing is based on consent), and the right to lodge a complaint with a competent supervisory authority.

15. Children

The application is not intended for children. Where app store policies or applicable law require age restrictions, the relevant store or national rules apply.

If the provider becomes aware that personal data of a child has been collected without an appropriate legal basis, reasonable measures will be taken to delete such data.

16. Application permissions

Location permission is required to display current coastal distance and boating speed.

Internet permission is required to download coastline packages, update package lists, and display advertisements.

The application may use audio alerts for status changes, such as transitions from a permitted to a prohibited planing zone, or vice versa. If the operating system requires additional notification permissions, the application may request them separately.

17. Changes to this Privacy Policy

The provider may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be published in the application, on the website, or by another appropriate method.

The date of the latest update is stated at the top of this document.
